Growth must work for every postcode, creating opportunity for every community and every business.

I am delighted that the new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, has asked me to serve as Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade. I have always believed business and government can work in partnership to raise living standards. The opportunity to bring science and innovation back together with the business department is also extremely exciting.

I am very proud of the work we did during the first 15 months of the Labour Government: the record-breaking International Investment Summit, three trade deals with the EU, US and India (our biggest export market, our single biggest trading partner, and the fastest growing big economy in the world), saving British Steel and the Harland and Wolff shipyards, and launching the UK’s Industrial Strategy and plan for Small Business.

I know the UK’s political turbulence is of concern to business leaders. Seven Prime Ministers in ten years requires reflection from us all. The UK needs a sustained spell of stability and delivery, and we need better growth in every postcode. For this to happen there must be a partnership between Government and the private sector, and an active and accessible Business Department. Businesses and innovators will get both from me.

Knowing Andy well from Greater Manchester, I can say with conviction he has always worked closely with business. The results are there to see in one of the most thriving and exciting cities in the world. There is a great deal to do to bring that success and optimism to the country as a whole.
